As we settle into the new year, I want to encourage you this week to continue to keep at the forefront of your mind those ideas, dreams, and goals you started the year with. Many people who are not reading this article and are not focused on becoming the best versions of themselves have already long forgotten all of the things they said they were going to do this year.
This brings me to my first encouragement for you in this post. Ideas are just dreams until they’re written down. If you haven’t already, it’s never too late to start but wherever you fall here, get your dreams, visions, ideas, goals, and any and everything else you want to accomplish down on paper. Got it? Good.
Next, let’s talk about your mindset. Yes, as my friend Tom Ziglar says, “What you feed your mind determines your appetite.” How do you look at the world? From a viewpoint of abundance or scarcity? I know your tendency may be to gloss over and quickly answer, “of course, I am an abundance mindset person.” I would encourage you to check-in with yourself and make sure.
Someone who thinks out of a scarcity mindset is focused primarily on themselves and any attention they pay to others is often with a penchant for distrust and skepticism. If other people aren’t out to get them directly, they’re likely working behind the scenes to somehow undermine them. Surely, that’s not you?
Abundance thinkers, on the other hand, are primarily focused on others. For all of the right reasons. They are always thinking of how they can lift others up, share what they have, and build into their relationships. Their fulfillment comes from seeing other people succeed. Of course, their lives are richer and their blessings are multiplied back to them because of all the good they do in the world. That’s just the way it works.
One other idea I would like you to consider as you begin to take mastery over your week, month, and the year is to consider time. The older I get, and the faster time goes by, the more I don’t buy into the concept of time management. My dictionary defines management as handling, directing, or controlling. Anyone who believes they can do this, raise your hand.
No, I think our time is invested. We make daily choices on how we invest our time. The better the investment we make, the greater the returns are both in the short-term and the long-term. This brings me to the old axiom by Dr. Steven Covery of focusing on the important versus the urgent. So many of our days are spent chasing the urgent, that we never get around to the important.
This is a serious challenge for you to consider for the rest of this week, month, and year. What will you do today that you will be glad you did tomorrow? Instead of having to adjust your schedule for a doctor’s appointment because you’re sick, how about doing things today to make sure you are well physically? Instead of getting to the end of the month and realizing the goal you wrote down at the beginning is out of reach, how about setting a task you can do today to move you in the direction of that goal? And then do it again, and again, until it becomes a habit?
How will your life be denied this year? By the minutes that slipped away each day or by the moments you created consistently that you – and others – will never forget?
