Are you Accepting Good Enough Because Your Fear is Great?

The more people I talk to and interact with, the more I hear it. Oh, it isn’t necessarily the same words, the same circumstances, or the same reasons but at the core, so many of us are overwrought with fear. There are plenty of sources that we blame for it, and certainly, almost a year into a global pandemic and all of the socioeconomic repercussions and fallout take it to the top of the list.

The truth is, if we didn’t have a pandemic we would create other excuses. Although most everyone knows what they need to do to overcome it, few people actually do it. Why is the pullback to comfortable so, well, comfortable? I don’t have all of the answers but the prevalence of this phenomenon cannot be ignored, and I hope to not only expose it with this post but to give you suggestions for how to overcome it beginning today.

First, let’s confront the truth. The truth is within you, within all of us, is the ability to learn, grow, and create. Sure, we may have to learn new skills and invest the time each day, consistently, to achieve new habits and new outcomes but each of us has the capabilities to do so. So why do so few people actually do it? Fear.

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said, “Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.” And so, rather than attempting great things, we revert back to good enough hoping that someday we might get the courage or the opportunity to pursue our dreams. Not realizing that all we are doing is wasting time. If that sounds harsh, forgive me, but if you are waiting for “things” to change, you’d better look to the only person who can change things. That would be you, my friend!

So if you’re ready to not become one of the defeated, to stop wasting time, and to stop waiting on and blaming your lack of success on anything and everything over which you have no controlGreatness, let me welcome you to the realm of greatness. I will caution you, the path to greatness is not easy, it is not without personal struggles, and it is not without failures. Lots of them. But the good news is that as you walk down the path of greatness, confronting and defeating your fears daily, you become transformed! The fear never fully goes away but the confidence you gain in yourself and your abilities cannot be defeated!

So, hopefully, I have convinced you at this point to confront your fears and begin your journey towards greatness. If that is you, and I really hope it is, then your next question should be something along the lines of “what do I do now,” or “how do I start?” So glad you asked. The answer is so simple, you may not believe it and even dismiss it, but don’t. One word, START. Start what? Start anything but do it with great intentionality and determination. Wise King Solomon said it this way in Ecclesiastes chapter 9 verse 10: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.”

I realize that you may be thinking, “do what?” It is an important question. No, it is THE important question. Maybe you can easily determine what you want to do or perhaps you’re someone who has no idea where to start. Either way, DO something. Next, and very quickly, I would encourage you to make time to think and daydream about what you really want to accomplish in and with your life. An even deeper question would be to consider what legacy do you want to leave after you’re gone? The truth is, you are going to leave a legacy, either by happenstance or by design. I would encourage you again to be intentional.

The next suggestion or really question I have for you is, “would you like some help with that?” This may sound self-serving but I assure you it is offered with only the greatest desire I have, and that is to serve you. Each week, I offer two 50-minute Discovery Calls where I help people assess where they currently are and help them identify where they want to go. Then I give them tools and suggestions to bridge the gap. These are powerful conversations intended to jump-start you on the path to greatness. If you would like more information or to book one of these two complimentary sessions, please click here

Whether you book a call with me or not, I cannot encourage you enough to do whatever you need to do to get clarity about what you want to do and the steps needed to get there. I cannot encourage you enough to write these down. Yes, pen to paper. There is something that happens when you take time to scribe your dreams, desires, and goals. Writing it somehow makes it more real and gives you something to refer back to, which you need to do every day.

That leads to the final suggestion, and that s to review your plans and goals daily at the beginning of each day before you do almost anything else. Why daily first thing in the morning? Because you want to write down the one step, action, or project you need to work on that day to get you one step closer to accomplishing your goal. This is why I recommend that you never work on more the three or four goals at a time. Therefore, you put those three to four items at the top of the priority list every day.

My friend, I want to see you claim and develop the gifts, talents, and abilities that you already have so that you can turn them into the greatness that is waiting to be unleashed by you. As I wrote last week, it’s never too late to start, and it’s always too soon to give up. I hope you’ll share your thoughts with me below and let me know what actions you are taking to overcome your fears. I can’t wait to see how great your good enough will become!
