One Step in the Direction of Success

So we’re approaching the end of May. It seems like the Pandemic has been going on for a lot longer than the ten weeks or so that we have all been adjusting to the “new normal.” How are you doing? How are you feeling?

I have to admit, the last two to three weeks for me have been the hardest. At the beginning of our shelter in place orders, perhaps the novelty made it interesting. As time has worn on, and the situation is slowly seeming to turn for the better, I have to admit I am struggling to remain focused on my goals. How about you?

Here is the reality though. Whatever the “new normal” is, will you be ready? I don’t mean you’ll slowly be ready to ramp yourself back up to where you were before the pandemic began, or perhaps where you were a few weeks in. My question for you is, what are you doing today so that tomorrow you are one step closer to your goals?

Sure, all of us have had to revise, revisit, or perhaps completely trash our 2020 goals. But that is no excuse to just mail it in. You have important work to do that no one else can do for you and that the people who can be influenced by your actions will benefit from it. I do not mean this as a trite statement. You have value to give.

Sometimes we have to do things even when we don’t feel like it. Today, for the first time in ten weeks or so, I went back to my gym to workout. I was nervous about it, I really didn’t feel well and could have given myself untold excuses why I shouldn’t go. I went anyway.

Am I glad I went? Yes. Did it put me into a mindset of achieving other objectives and getting back into a positive reinforcing loop where everything builds on something else? Yes. Will it work for you? YES!

As I often say when speaking or writing, the first step is ALWAYS the hardest. Our mind and our limiting beliefs can create untold scenarios for why we should wait, why now is not the right time, and why it is better to spend more time evaluating before taking action. That is all bunk and it is what separates the few who accomplish their goals and make a difference in the world from the majority that never do.

If you’re reading this, you likely know the truth behind what I am saying. Once you have climbed over the wall of taking that first step, there is no stopping you. The rush of adrenaline, the feeling of accomplishment, and the positive self-image you develop simply by taking one action toward your goals can propel you to never before attained heights.

My challenge for you this week is to identify ONE simple step you need to take towards achieving your top 2-3 goals that you are currently working on. Identify them, plan whatever you need to accomplish them, and then go DO them!

What do you think? What is one thing you can do today that will make your tomorrow better? Post your comments below – I would love to see what you plan to do – and how it propels you going forward.
