It’s Hard to See Your Future When You’re Staring at Your Past

Happy New Year! As the year begins and we are all on 1,200 calorie diets, going to bed by 10:00 p.m. so that we can get up to exercise by 5:00, and reading three new books while focusing on how to break revenue and income records, let me welcome you back, perhaps abruptly, to reality.

I certainly do not mean to throw cold water and by no means do I intend to do anything other than to encourage you to make 2021 a year you will look back on with gratitude twelve months from now. I am not a proponent of New Year’s resolutions, so my tongue in cheek poking fun is just that. But seriously, where will you be on January 5, 2022? That is entirely up to you.

Your opportunities to grow this year are unlimited. Perhaps, better stated, they are only limited by you. Very directly, only you can limit the number of things you can accomplish this year. Yes, you can throw a litany of excuses at me; pandemic, economy, bad weather, full moon. Need I go on? It’s a new year and I want you to wipe the slate clean.

You are where you are right now because of the choices you have made in the past. Whether they were great choices or terrible choices, you made them, and here you are. You can’t change them. So why get caught up focused on what has happened in the past, where you have absolutely no control?

I have a very simple choice you can make right now. I said it was simple, but it’s not easy. But I believe in you and I know you can do it because you’ve read this far, and hopefully you read a lot of my other blog posts, watch my YouTube videos, and even read my book so I believe you are committed to being the best version of yourself and making a difference in this world.

With that in mind, I want you to completely let go of your past. The mistakes, the regrets, the lies, the fears, and any other messes you made. Your future begins right here, right now. No matter where you are, no matter what obstacles you’re facing, you have the opportunity to make today, tomorrow, and every future tomorrow better and brighter by focusing on creating your future each and every day.

Remember I said it was simple, but not easy. In fact, it will be hard. You will likely mess up, feel uncomfortable, and (gasp) fail several times. But guess what? You can do hard things! And as the quote, I share often from Zig Ziglar says, “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly until you learn to do it well.”

Start today so you can get the messy stuff out of the way as soon as possible. Don’t use the excuse of when ______ happens, or after _______. Just start. Now. Today. Your tomorrows will never be the same, and neither will you. Regardless of where you are starting from, where you end up is all that matters. How far will you get? Your future is unlimited.
